Perfect example of the fact that no, your frames don't have to match. They don't have to be the same wood and they don't have to all be metal. Sometimes, you've just gotta go with it and keep adding and trust yourself to know when it's done. Nail holes can be filled and a paint touch up cures all oops.

Newspaper's your friend. Trace and then cut out the shape of each item you hope to use in your wall arrangement and then with double stick tape you can play around until you get it right. Designer tip: When your tracing the item, mark the paper with and "x" where the hanger is and then you can hammer your nail right through it and pull out the paper for easy hanging.
I know we've looked at this pic before...but I can't get over how much I adore not only the wall arrangement but the whole space.

You don't see this style of arrangement very often, but I kinda like that middle split. I think is successful because of the use of all black frames and black and white photography. What d'ya think?

LOVE this post! I'm sure I'll be coming back to it, as I have always wanted to do a "wall of shame," but with my engineering and math background, I'd end up using all of the same color frame, hung in straight lines. I might have to just collect the frames myself, and let someone else (do you travel to TN?) come hang them for me. And I especially love the first one with the awesome carpet on the stairs, I'll be looking for cool carpet to do our stairs in now, since that will eventually be the only carpet in my house.
You darn left brainers! ;) You'll be fine...use the newspaper idea and take a few days to change it around and look at the different arrangements til it feels right. And, yes, I travel! ;D
Not to sound redundant...but I LOVE this post too!!! I love your first comment and the pic as well (makes me wish I had a nice staircase in my house). The one that is most like me is the pottery barn one. I also love the examples of the frames with no pics in them. I keep hunting for frames and then find other purposes for them. Some day...

I have always loved the look of photos in VERY different frames and the haphazardness of it all. But there is something anal inside of me that won't let me do it unless it is symetrical. Boo, I hope I can convince myself to just "copy" this design.
